China said on Sunday that the Taiwan issue is the "first red line" that cannot be crossed in China-US relations, calling on Washington to adhere to the "one China" principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques between China and the United States.
This came at a press conference held by a Chinese Foreign Ministry official to answer journalists' questions about the most important topics that will be covered by the meeting that will bring together Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan next Tuesday in Beijing.
The official explained that China will clarify its official positions on the Taiwan issue, its development rights and its strategic security during the upcoming meeting between Wang and Sullivan, describing the forces demanding the island's independence as the "greatest threat" to peace and stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The official stressed China's continued support for promoting peace and justice in the Middle East, especially supporting Palestine in restoring its legitimate national rights, expressing his hope that Washington will listen to the voices of the majority of members of the international community and take a responsible position.
