"Health": Providing Jahra and Farwaniya Hospitals with the first-of-its-kind integrated positron emission tomography device

The Ministry of Health stressed the importance of providing the first-of-its-kind integrated positron emission tomography (PET) device with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the nuclear medicine departments at Jahra and Farwaniya hospitals, as it provides a more accurate diagnosis than performing either examination separately.

"الصحة": تزويد مستشفيي الجهراء والفروانية بجهاز التصوير البوزتروني المدمج الأول من نوعه

This came during a training course that was launched today, Sunday, at the Institute of Medical Specialties under the title (Radiation Safety of the Positron Emission Tomography Device Integrated with Magnetic Resonance) organized by the Radiation Protection Department at the Ministry of Health.

The head of the organizing committee of the course, Dr. Hanan Al-Dosari, said in a press statement that this event is sponsored by the Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Affairs, Dr. Munther Al-Hasawi, and is the fifth course in a series of training courses that were launched last March.

Al-Dosari added that the Positron Emission Tomography device combines the use of Positron Emission Tomography and Magnetic Resonance to evaluate and diagnose cases. This integration provides accurate images of tissues using magnetic resonance images. It can also determine the activity of the metabolic process of cells, thus providing a more accurate diagnosis than performing either examination separately.

She pointed out that the ministry provided this device, the first of its kind, in the nuclear medicine departments at Jahra and Farwaniya hospitals at a time when the ministry and the Radiation Protection Department are keen to provide such training courses for workers in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation to develop their skills and apply the highest standards of radiation safety.

She pointed out that the number of participants in the course reached 99 participants from the departments of nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, Kuwait University, and the Emergency Center for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

It is worth noting that the course is presented by the Director of the Research Facilities Department in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Medical Physics Consultant Dr. Adnan Al-Watban and a group of specialists from the Radiation Protection Department and will last for two days.
