Inter Miami announces Messi's absence due to injury

Argentine star Lionel Messi will miss the next two matches for his team Inter Miami in the American Football League after injuring his right ankle during his country's victory in the Copa America final on Sunday, according to what his coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino announced Tuesday.

The former Spanish Barcelona star (37 years old) was injured in the 64th minute of the final of the continental competition held in the United States, which ended with the Tango team retaining its title by defeating Colombia 1-0 after overtime.

Messi left the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to sit on the bench, where he burst into tears, while cameras showed significant swelling in his ankle.

Messi is scheduled to miss Inter Miami's home matches, Wednesday, against Toronto FC and Saturday against Chicago Fire.

“There will be more tests to determine the seriousness of the situation,” Martino said. “He should do more tests and wait for the results.”

For his part, Messi expressed, in a post on Instagram, his thanks for the messages of concern and support he received after Sunday’s match.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner wrote: "I want to thank everyone for the messages and greetings. I am fine, and I hope that soon I will be able to return to the field again and enjoy what I love to do most."

Inter Miami, with 14 wins, 5 draws and 4 defeats from 23 matches, ranks second in the Eastern Conference of the league with 47 points, one point behind leader Cincinnati, which beat Miami 6-1 on the sixth of this month.

Inter Miami will begin the campaign to defend its title in the League Cup designated for American and Mexican clubs next week.
