Egyptian fencer Mohamed El Sayed won the bronze medal in the men's sabre event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, giving his country its first medal at the Games.
The 21-year-old, ranked 10th in the world, defeated Hungary’s Tibor Andravesi on golden point 8-7.
He exploded with joy after winning the bronze medal, jumping in the style of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo!
El Sayed achieved three victories over Colombian John Edison Rodriguez 15-7 in the round of 32, Italian Andrea Santarelli 15-0 in the round of 16, and Belgian Nesser Loyola 9-8 on golden point in the quarter-finals, before losing to Frenchman Yannick Borel 9-15 in the semi-finals.
Mr. Aksa Borel, a gold medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympics, was in the round of 32 of the Tokyo 2021 Summer Edition.
Mr. Borel started fencing at the age of six in Tanta, influenced by his parents’ work as fencing coaches.
Mr. Burrell, who studies data analytics at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, began his Olympic career at the Tokyo 2021 Summer Games, where he finished eighth in the sabre event.
His compatriot Ziad El-Sisi reached the sabre semi-finals on Saturday, but failed to win the bronze medal.
This is the fourth medal for an Arab fencer in Olympic history, after the silver medal achieved by Tunisian Fares Ferjani on Saturday in the sabre event, the silver medal achieved by Egyptian Alaa Eldin Abouelkassem in foil (London 2012) and the bronze medal achieved by Tunisian Ines Boubakri in foil (Rio 2016).
