Harris has selected Walz for the position, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Harris will introduce her new running mate at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, according to local media.

The event is expected to be similar to how then-presidential nominee Joe Biden announced Harris as his running mate during the 2020 presidential race.

The focus has been on Harris’s three final running mates, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, and Walz, but final decisions have not yet been officially announced.

Walz, 60, a National Guard veteran and former teacher, was elected to a Republican-leaning House district in 2006 and served for 12 years before being elected Minnesota governor in 2018.

During his years as governor, Walz pushed a progressive agenda that included free school meals, climate change goals, tax cuts for the middle class and expanded paid leave for Minnesota workers.

Walz championed women’s reproductive rights but also showed conservative leanings while representing a rural House district, championing agricultural interests and supporting gun rights.

Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, has chosen a Midwestern populist politician whose home state is a reliable Democratic presidential candidate but is close to Wisconsin and Michigan, two states that are often hotly contested between the parties.
