Syria is in the crosshairs of ISIS as terrorist attacks multiply

The United Nations special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, told Security Council members that the threat of terrorism “is re-emerging in Syria, with attacks by ISIS militants expected to double this year, endangering the lives of civilians there.”

Pedersen warned the Security Council of the “delicate security situation in Syria,” saying: “The threat of a regional conflict in Syria has not diminished, especially with the escalation of Israeli raids there.”

About half a million people died in the conflict, and half of the country's population of 23 million before the war was displaced.

Israel has been attacking targets in Syria linked to Iran for years, but the frequency of these strikes has escalated over the past five months as the Gaza war continues.

Politically, Pedersen urged the Security Council to continue the Syrian-led peace negotiations with the participation of “key international actors,” in line with the resolution unanimously adopted by the Security Council in 2015.

Pedersen said: "The Syrian conflict is ultimately a political conflict that can only be resolved when the Syrian parties are able to achieve their legitimate aspirations."

He added that the recent legislative elections "are not an alternative to the political process stipulated in the 2015 Security Council resolution."
